Citizens of Honduras no more require a visa for a short-term visit of Russia, as an agreement to this effect will come into force on 11.07.2015 (Official information of the Russian MFA site).

Under the visa-free short-term tourist travel agreement signed between the two countries several months ago, their citizens are eligible for entry, exit, transit or stay on the territory of the other country for up to 90 days.

Citizens of many countries can entry to Russia without visas: almost all CIS contries, Thailand, Serbia, Montenegro, Turkey, Israel, SAR Hong Kong, SAR Macau, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Cuba, Peru, Venezuela, Fiji, South Korea and etc.

Since autumn of 2002 Russian Government has been making attempts to build visa free zone between Russia and Schengen Contries, but European officials have always denied.

Sincerely yours, Mr. Repovesi

From 2002 citizens of Schengen coutries, Japan, and Great Britain could receive pre-arranged Russia visas on border point of Kaliningrad area: Khrabrovo airport (near Kaningrad), border checkpoints Mamonovo, and Bagrationovsk (Polish border), and, sometimes, on Morskoe border checkpoint (Lithuanian border).

Russian people vain hoped, that contries gave accurate response.

So, from 01.01.2015 this program will be cancelled. From this date citizens of Schengen coutries, Japan, and Great Britain must have Russian visa issued in consulates.

See official press release of Kaningrad branch of Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Russian customs point on RUS-GEO border Verkhny Lars was opened for cyclists on Mar 2014. The pedestrian pass is prohibited up to date.

You can read traveller's story about crossing it on Aug, 2014 (in Russian).

Verkhny Lars(RUS)-Dariali(GEO, ex-Kazbegi) is only one border crossing point on Russian-Georgian Border. It has been opened for all passport holders since 2011. 1999-2011 it had been closed for non-CIS nationalities.

Duo to several Government Decrees there are four types of permanent closed areas in Russian Federation.

1. Closed Cities (42 cities).
2. Territories closed for foreigners (parts of 19 Federal Subjects of Russian Federation: in Leningrad Oblast, in Kaliningrad Oblast, and 17 another).
3. Military towns (approx. 170 towns).
4. Border Security Zone (in 45 Federal Subjects of Russian Federation along state border).

Travelling for pleasure for foreigners in Closed Cities, Territories closed for foreigners, and Military towns is almost impossible.

Travelling for pleasure for foreigners in Border Security Zone is possible, if they have special permit of Border Guard Service of Russia. Such permits are free, making by post, but are time consuming (not less 70 days, may be 100 days). Transit via Border Security Zone from/to border crossing customs point doing freely.

From 25 of April 2014 the Crimea will be subject of Russian migration law and will be covered by Russian visa/migration system.

In this date Russian security checkpoints on the roads on the North edge of the peninsula, railways stations Armyansk and Dzhankoy will be changed to official Russian customs points, using Russian migration databases, giving and picking up Russian-Belorussian Migration cards.

On 25.04.2014 the Russian customs/frontier point in the port Kavkaz (East coast of Kerch Strait) will be passed into nothingness.

Tourists of Ecuador no more require a visa for a short-term visit of Russia, as an agreement to this effect comes into force on 24.11.2012.

All passport holders can cross Russian-Georgian border and Russian-Azerbaijan border from summer 2011. Before this date that borders were closed from Russian side as anti-terrorist measure: only citizens of CIS-countries, Georgia, Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Iran were eligible for crossing.

An agreement to this effect was signed in Beijing on 19.06.2012 by Russian Ambassador Sergei Razov and representatives of China's southern administrative district. This law will take in force after implementation (several months).

Macau passport holders will be allowed to enter Russia for a period of up to 30 days without a visa.

Russia has visa-free agreements with approx. 100 states include Hong Kong, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Israel, Turkey, Serbia and almost all CIS countries.

And, in practice, there is no mandate migration registration of foreigners in Russia now. All fines and another punishments of foreigners for registration's absence were cancelled on March 2011.

Foreign tourists can walk in Russia freely, exclude frontier zones along all borders (except Belorussian border) - easy special permit needed; 19 special closed zones for foreigners - visiting is almost impossible; and 42 closed atomic and missile cities (most of them are in Siberia) - visiting is almost impossible.

The Kazbegi-Verkhny Lars border crossing point, the only official land connection between Georgia and Russia, reopened on Monday, 01-MAR-2010. The checkpoint had been closed since 2006.

Now it works every day from 01-MAR till 31-OCT 06:00-22:00(russian time), and in winter 07:00-19:00(russian time).

The crossing is for cars, not for pedestrians. No information about cycling crossing.

Transcript of Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov Interview to TV Channel Vesti, November 11, 2009

Question: Sergey Viktorovich, good afternoon! If I may, I want to start with the topic that, in my opinion, interests the maximum number of our viewers; it's the prospect of a visa-free regime in Russia and the EU. Recently Dutch Minister for European Affairs Frans Timmermans said that he had held some consultations and that in his view it was a prospect of not two or three, as said before, but of five to ten years. There are some complications, aren't there? How are the negotiations going?

Lavrov: We find it hard to understand our European partners, because the visa-free dialogue has been one of the forms of our cooperation, and it was launched quite a long time ago. As early as 2004 the then President of the EU Commission, Romano Prodi, having vigorously backed up this idea, said that it was quite realistic to provide visa-free travel for the citizens of Russia and the European Union by 2008. But, unfortunately, the current makeup of the European Commission has approached this question in a rather overbureaucratized way and we have currently not progressed to a specific "road map" for us to agree within a reasonable period of time. We want to set this period and reach an agreement.

Our proposals are on the table. The visa-free dialogue is conducted regularly, with several rounds already held and additional ones scheduled. However, we believe, without setting a specific date and devising concrete measures needed to agree such a regime, it would be difficult to expect a result. We are seeking from our partners in the European Union a very simple thing: Tell us what Russia should do for you to reach such an agreement with us. We, in turn, as Russia's leadership has repeatedly stated over the past three years, are ready to shift to a visa-free regime even tomorrow, without any preconditions.

I hope that goodwill will be forthcoming on the other side too. Speaking of trips abroad, it should be noted that Russian citizens travel not only to Europe. In addition to European countries, we are engaged in about twenty negotiations with our partners to facilitate the visa regime; in five cases that will be a visa-free regime. This is about Nicaragua, Chile, Ecuador, Uruguay and Mongolia. So not only with Europe do we seek to make travel conditions easier for our citizens, but also with other states. A simplified regime is in place with European countries so far, which extends to a number of categories of our citizens favorable enough conditions for obtaining visas, including long-term, up to five years, and multiple.

Question: The prospect of facilitation or, perhaps, the introduction of a visa-free regime with the five countries that you have mentioned this is a prospect of what time?

Lavrov: It is about the coming months. With respect to Chile, we expect to sign such an agreement right next week.

More and more cyclists cross the RUS-FIN border every day

Last Sunday I crossed the russian-finnish border via Brusnichnoe - Nuijamaa crossborder point on the saddle. There were two another cyclists, when I went to Finland, and three on my return way.

Fantastic!

PS: I spent that time for customs/passport procedures:

Brusnichnoe - 4 minutes
Nuijamaa - 2 minutes
Nuijamaa - 1 minute
Brusnichnoe - 5 minutes

I showed only my Russian passport (with Finnish visa, Schengen type), and got 4 stamps. Nothing additional papers!

Dear Friends,

Earlier I wrote in this forum about my plans for a big cycling trip around the Baltic States, St Petersburg, Finland, Sweden.
I am on my way now, and things are going quite well. At the moment I am close to Narva/Ivangorod, and I expect to enter Russia tomorrow morning (9th July), if Russian officials allow me.

My plan is to arrive in St Petersburg at the 11th of July in the evening. I will take the coastal road from the west, along Peterhof and then further to the city centre.

My question is if there is anyone who would like to cycle with me from Peterhof (or closer to the city) to my accommodation (near metro Polytechnitjskaja), show me the way etc. I will manage myself I think, but it would be nice if someone is willing to help me.

As I do not have access to Internet all the time, the best way to contact me is by SMS. After I enter Russia (the morning of the 9th July), I will have my Russian telephone number working again, and you can send me SMS if you are interested. My number is
+7 921 8615975.

Thanks in advance for your help and good cycling.

Visa free travel exchange Agreement between Russia and Venezuela takes in force

On 06 March, 2009.
See official press release of Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
http://www.mid.ru/brp_4.nsf/sps/0FBFA80B490074EDC325756F0050 5C45 (in russian), use http://translate.google.com

Citizens of Venezuela can go to Russia for 90 days during half of year without visa. The Government Agreement was signed in November 2008 and take in force on 06 March 2009.

The same agreements were taken in force between Russia and Thailand, and Russia and Israel earlier.

The government of European Union declined similar agreement, which was proposed by government of Russian Federation.

Medical problem for cyclists in Russia: tick-borne encephalitis and borreliosis

There are many forests in Russian, and there's tick-borne encephalitis and borreliosis(Lyme disease).

That diseases are more or less cover more than 50% of Russian Federation.

Possibility to be infected depend on the region and the season. See the map:

index.php?t=getfile&id=8&private=0

So, if you was snapped by tick in Leningrad area in May or June, probability to be taken ill is 6% for tick-borne encephalitis and less 1% for borreliosis.

But in West Sibiria the probability is more 30%, and it is really seriously.

So, you should make previous immunisation in your country. If you didn't have immunisation and had multiple bites, you should go to nearest russian hospital and make postliminary immunisation. It costs approx. 20-30EUR.

The level of danger of tick-borne encephalitis and borreliosis in Russia for cyclists is depend on season and region. From 0 (zero) till high (summer time, West Sibiria).

In Leningrad area the level of danger of tick-borne encephalitis and borreliosis is from low till middle.

Medical problem for cyclists in Russia: Rabies - dogs and foxes

Russia is not rabies free country.
In 2008 about 25 people died of rabies.
Two of them - in Moscow. (1 - pensioner, who tried to catch raccoon near summer house 100 km from Moscow, 2 - adult person, who was bitten by fox 150 km from Moscow. Both of them didn't go to doctor after the bite.)

There is no cases of human rabies near St.Petersburg and Leningrad area for more than 15 years.

Anyway, there is strong rabies control in Russian Federation. Any doctor and veterinarian MUST send special paper (Federal Rabies Notice) to Moscow immediately, if he/she detects rabies of pet or wild animal.

Any traveller can find anti-rabies vaccine (Vnukovo-32-RABIVAK, russian made) in any big hospital. Anti-rabies vaccination is FREE in Russia. ??ourse of vaccination is 7 shots in the arm (0, 3, 7, 14, 30, 90, 180 day).

The level of danger of rabies in Russia for cyclists is low. Sometimes, in some areas the level of danger is middle.

PS: The special situation of rabies in some caves (vampires). See spelaean sites for more information.
