Hello, I'm going to arrive at Pulkovo airport on a Saturday (21.7.) at around 14:00 and I'm thinking of cycling into town to my hostel. Do you think thats possible and do you have a suggested route? Or are the roads around the air just to busy for cycling?

Hello Volker,

At 14:00 (actually from 08:00 till 21:00) roads are very busy for cycling. Anyway, you can use service maps.yandex.ru, and then press the "Панорамы" button to see view of streets of SPb, like this:

Also there is a bikepath on the left (or West Smile ) side of the Moskovsky highway from internal Pulkivo-1 terminal, past international Pulkovo-2 terminal, to Ploshad' Pobedy (Victory square).
This bikepath is no clearly marked, but it is there. You can drive by it to the city part without problem.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm not a big fan of busy roads with car drivers not used to cyclists. On the other hand, I wouldn't be the first, see here [ http://www.bikemap.net/#lat=59.800910864574&lng=30.26746 277771&zoom=13&maptype=ts_terrain]

Unfortunately openstreetmap shows only a foot path. So I'm not so sure wether that would be a better idea.

Could you tell us your hostel coordinates/name, then we would offer to you something. Also 21.07 is a weekend, therefore there will be some less the cars then on the week. And (possibly) someone (I, for example) could be your guide)

ok. I'll think about route.

for example - http://maps.yandex.ru/-/CRsErDMw (there is need a guide) or something else (http://maps.yandex.ru/-/CRsIYGNW).
Also it is possibly to ride straight by Moskovsky prospect if there is a low traffic.
Anyway, there is enough time to select an optimal route Smile .

the first one seems to be the most diverse one. It has a bit of garden green at the beginning. But how do you get across the motorway?

There are a tunnel under the railway lines and a footpath on a viaduct over the Ring Road. This is a crowded place for the transition between the dachas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dacha) and the city.

where? In the city part? Cars are everywhere, but there are a some parallel streets.

Dear German guest was met and delivered at the hostel)
I've ridden approx. 52 km, including 18 from Pulkovo to the hostel.

Volker is lucky, because I've been under heavy rain before meet and under light rain after, and haven't been during the trip together Very Happy

Hi Peter,

thanks again for picking me up at the airport. That was very helpful of you and gave me an easy introduction to cycling in St. Petersburg.

I'm savely back home now and yes my bike survived Karelia (with just one puncture.)
