Hello Velorussia, we are planning to go by bike from Helsinki to Vaalimaa near the coast at the Finnish/Russian boarder, and then to Vyborg and S:t Petersburg. The first step is to apply for a visa.

From Vyborg to S:t Petersburg it is possible to follow the coast road, or a route further away from the coast (via Kamenka). Do you have some opinion if one should avoid any route? For example because of too much traffic or bad road.

Well, I advice you a coastal road because it more interesting. Tha road via Kamenka also have not difficult traffic, but it is not so picturesque.

Thank you for advice, just wanted to check because I had a bad experience of bumpy roads when we went by bus to S:t Petersburg from Finland in the early 80's.

Did you go on the ride from Helsinki to St. Petersburg? How was it? What was your route and where did you stay?

THere are not to many possibilities Smile There are hotels in Vyborg (several) Primorsk (just one) and several in Zelenogorsk area.

So if go from Finland you may stop in Vyborg 70 km from the border, then in Zelenogorsk (about 100 km by coastal road). If 100 km is too much - the only possibility is Primorsk.

It was a scool trip from Turku to St Petersburg (Leningrad then). I dont remember the route and which hotel we stayed at in Leningrad. We saw interesting things like the Winter Palace and there were a lot of policemen, soldiers and angry babuschkas (women with scarf). They said that the roads were bad since they were for the military.

In that case I will try to go from Viborg to Zelenogorsk. Read on Velorussia that hotels are expensive in russia. There seem to be cheap youth hostels in St Petersburg, but have not found any in Viborg or Zelenogorsk. Do you maybe know if there are some low budget hotels there? Confused

So I don't think that there is a low cost hotel in Zelenogorsk... But in Vyborg there should be several... For example Hotel "?????". I lived there a few years ago. Room should cost about 35-50 euro

Hopefully its possible to go to Vyborg and then find some cheap hotel there. But cant see the name of the hotel you wrote. It was not that much policemen, soldiers and so on when we were in Leningrad in 1984 but more than one was used to.

Hi there,

we'll do the trip from Helsinki to St. Petersburg in a few weeks, too.
And I've got two questions:

1#
Do you think it is possible to camp with two tents and the bikes between the finnish/russian border and St. Petersburg or is there no way for security reasons? (We are 4 people)

2#
How long tooks it for usually to cross the border with the bikes? (Because of the passport and visa controllings and so on)

The advices about the hotels in this area and the nice coast road are very very helpfull so far!! Thank you a lot!

Yours,
Debbie

Well... it's safety enough to camp in Russian forest. Anyway try to camp far from peoples... In forest, not near to villages, far from roads - 100 metres avay of the roads and you will be absolutely safe.

There are hotels in Vyborg (several) and Primorsk (just one). In Zelenogorsk also.

average time for cxrossing border on bikes - one hour.

Sure. But the place of the camping must be 1 km from nearest village, or further.

20 minutes:
2 minutes before the Finnish customs office (Vaalimaa, Nujamaa, Imatra and ect.) on the traffic-lite.

40 seconds on the Finnish customs.

7 minutes for cycling from Finnish customs to Russian one - approx. 3 km.

10 minutes on the Russian customs.
